HOURLY / HALF-DAY / FULL DAY TRIPS

North Street Bridge – Leisurely 4-Hour Trip

“Go with the flow” down the North Branch of the Moose River. Pristine Adirondack scenery surrounds you as you float down this winding river. Small sandy beaches dot the banks and are ideal for picnicking and swimming. Wildlife such as deer, beaver, otter and Great Blue Herons are frequently spotted along the shores.

Tickner’s van will shuttle you and the boats to the put-in. Bring your own or rent from us. Then enjoy a quiet, leisurely paddle as you head downstream approximately eight miles to Tickner’s dock on the Middle Branch of the Moose River. About ¾ into the trip, a portage of around 300 yards on a well-marked trail is required around Indian Rapids. (We have portaging wheels available for those interested.) Not long after the small rock garden, the North Branch of the Moose meets the Middle Branch of the Moose where you’ll end your journey at Tickner’s dock. Most of our customers spend about 4 hours enjoying the trip, while others paddle straight through in 3, and some choose to spend 5, playing along the way.

Reservations are typically a good idea. Tickner’s opens daily at 8:30 a.m. during the summer season and closes at 6:00 p.m. Our van runs back and forth to the put in from opening until about 5 hours before we close so that we can make sure you make it back to our shop before we close. Just give us a call to let us know what time you are interested in going and have your credit card ready so that we can hold the boats of your choice for you. (Spring and Fall hours/days may vary.)

River & Rail – Paddle Down &Ride Back Aboard the Adirondack Scenic Railroad

Paddle the Middle Branch of the Moose River from Tickner’s dock in Old Forge to our private whistle stop along the historic Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Yes, you and your boat travel back to town via this vintage train.

The Moose River drifts slowly downstream towards Lock & Dam, an old wooden spillway, then twists and turns through the Black River Wild Forest. Views of Flatrock and Little Round Top Mountains blend with lowland cedar marshes. Approximately six miles downstream, paddlers pull out at Tickner’s landing, where boats and people are boarded and return on a scheduled train. Transportation is provided back to Tickner’s shop from the train station. Two short 25-yard portages are necessary with one optional carry around a set of riffles.

Reservations are required as there is limited space available. During the summer season, River & Rail is offered Thursdays through Sundays with two train times available. Tickner’s wants you on the water by 9:30 a.m. for the 1:30 p.m. train pick-up or on the water by 12:00 p.m. for the 4:00 p.m. train pick-up. You are welcome to start earlier to allow yourselves even more time to explore along the way. Upon your return to the Thendara Train Station, Tickner’s staff will meet you there and bring you and the boats back to their shop where your journey began. Sorry, the train no longer allows dogs on the train.  They are welcome on the other trips that Tickner’s offers!

Otter (9.5’ Kayak) $ 34 Portage Wheels $ 8

Rondaxe Road Bridge – 6-Hour Trip

For an entire day on the river, the more energetic paddler can put in above the North Street Bridge and extend that trip another four miles, totaling approximately 12 miles. Please keep in mind that beginners and children usually find this trip a bit too tiring.

Then enjoy a quiet paddle as you head downstream approximately 12-miles to Tickner’s dock on the Middle Branch of the Moose River. About 5/6ths into the trip, a portage of around 300 yards on a well-marked trail is required around Indian Rapids. (We have portaging wheels available for those interested.) Not long after the small rock garden, the North Branch of the Moose meets the Middle Branch of the Moose where you’ll end your journey at Tickner’s dock. Most of our customers spend about 6 hours enjoying the trip, but please keep in mind that beginners and children usually find this trip a bit too tiring.

Reservations are a good idea as the drive to the put-in ties up a Tickner’s driver for a good amount of time and must be worked in around other reservations. Tickner’s opens daily at 8:30 a.m. during the summer season and closes at 6:00 p.m. We like you at Tickner’s at least 7 hours before closing so that we can make sure you make it back to our shop before we close.
